Most people are comfortable with the idea of installing anti-virus software and security programs on their home PC in order to ward off hackers and malicious code. But with the rise of smart-phone technology people have become complacent about the safety of the personal information that they carry around on the multi-tasking device in their pockets. You have to think of a smart phone as a small computer which, as with all such devices, is vulnerable to hackers unless you take steps to protect it.

Passwords

The first step you should take is to add a password to your smart phone that has to be entered when it is powered up and before the screen is unlocked. All major platforms, including Android and Windows Phone, will let you add a password in this way, usually as a series of four numbers. This PIN gives you easy access to your mobile phone but protects your details from casual browsers should it be lost or stolen.

App Understanding

The second thing to consider is that smart phones, just like computers, will only get viruses if you download files without thinking about the consequences. With Android in particular, hackers can create a backdoor to your data through malicious applications that you might have downloaded from the entirely legitimate Android Market. Google does monitor its apps and selects only those which it deems to be harmless, but this has not prevented a slew of dangerous programs slipping through the net and playing havoc with some users’ phones.

Security Software

The best way to protect against infection in this manner is to be cautious. Do a little research, read user reviews and check the web to see whether or not an app is safe to use or harbouring some unwanted digital parasite. There is, however, another way to protect your phone, which is through dedicated anti-virus applications. Major software companies who work on suites for Windows PCs have begun creating similar programs designed to secure your smart phone and eradicate any unwelcome visitors. You may have to pay for these services, but the investment could be well worth it.

Wi-Fi Usage

Some hackers will be able to pull information from your phone without even getting software on to it. This can happen if you are using an unsecured wi-fi hotspot in a public place such as a cafe or library. Cyber-criminals can monitor the airwaves and grab data without your knowledge. The best advice is to only use public wi-fi networks for basic tasks that do not involve the transfer of personal information. Ideally, for improved security you should rely on your smart phone’s own 3G connection to go online when you are out and about. Your password-protected, encrypted wi-fi at home is good alternative if you are worried about your smart phone’s monthly data allowance.

Update Your Mobile OS

You would not leave your Windows PC without the latest updates for too long for fear of a virus exploiting a recently patched loophole. The same should apply to your smart phone. Some mobile platforms are updated more regularly than others, but you should be able to check directly on your handset or by plugging your phone into your PC via USB.

Common sense can be your most powerful tool when it comes to smart-phone security. These tips have hopefully revealed a bit more about the murky techniques of mobile hackers and how best to avoid being stung by them.

Remember last time we figured out Google Search replacing the ‘+’ operator, here is a new finding. Today I was just searching for something as “late in 2011″ and instead of initial ‘l’ I accidentally typed semicolon (;) and you know these days the moment you type the first character, Google starts churning it’s wheels. And this time it landed up good for me.

I tried other special characters also (almost every) and I really got amazed to see how Google Search has been improving. Characters that I have personally tested-

~ (tilde)

! (exclamation mark)

@ (at the rate sign)

# (hash sign)

$ (dollar sign)

% (percent sign)

^ (caret sign)

& (ampersand sign)

( ) { } [ ] (parentheses)

- (minus sign)

_ (underscore)

= (equals sign)

+ (plus sign)

All the above special characters you will find just below the function keys. One important thing here to not is * (asterisk) is still not included in this addition. If words like ‘databases, queries, mysql, oracle’ sounds familiar to you, you know why asterisk cannot be a part of search. Later on I found more symbols that are working on Google Search, here they are-

. (full stop)

, (comma)

: (colon)

; (semicolon)

| (vertical bar)

“ (quotation marks)

< (less-than sign)

> (greater-than sign)

‘ (apostrophe)

\ (backslash)

/ (slash)

? (question mark not working same as *)

I like this addition very much, love to see Google evolving so dynamically. If you find something strange or new with these symbols, do let us know.

One of the File-sharing pioneer ‘MegaUpload.com’ is dead, shut down at the hands of the US federal government. Many reporters are indicating that the reason behind this shutdown is the recent buzz for SOPA and PIPA, but as of now this activity is not directly related to those Acts. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested four people, and charged three others, in the anti-piracy sting. MegaUpload has been shut down by the US federal government.

Update: Megaupload is back again!! http://109.236.83.66

The above ip address looks fake to me, I have taken a screenshot in the morning and it looked like this and now if you check its something else. I am really not very sure about this being the official new site.

US federal government seized their domain names, undertaking $50 million in assets, and at the same time New Zealand police arrested four of the site’s key employees, including Megaupload’s founder Kim Dotcom. In a 72-page mega piracy indictment unsealed in a Virginia federal court, prosecutors charged that the site has earned more than $175 million since 2005, most of it is based on copyright infringement.

The indictment goes after six individuals, who between them owned 14 Mercedes-Benz automobiles with name plates such as POLICE, MAFIA, STONED, CEO, HACKER, GOOD, EVIL, and GUILTY. The group also had a 2010 Maserati, a 2008 Rolls-Royce, and a 1989 Lamborghini. They had not one but three Samsung 83″ TVs, and two Sharp 108″ TVs. Motor bikes, jet skis, artwork, and even 60 Dell servers could all be forfeit to the government if it can prove its case against the members of the “Mega Conspiracy.”

Remember Megaupload recently released a viral video on Youtube with $3 million budget, where they represented various stats and also users saying how much they love Megaupload?

The indictment also charges Megaupload “on or about November 10, 2011, a member of the Mega Conspiracy made a transfer of $185,000 to further an advertising campaign for Megaupload.com involved a musical recording and a video.” Do you really think that is a valid reason to seize?

I don’t remember the exact time, but back in my mind I remember Viacom made many of the same charges against YouTube, but never heard that US federal government knocked the Eric Schmidt’s or Chad Hurley’s door anytime. Let me know if you remember something on those lines..

In addition to these charges on Megaupload, the government contends that everything about the site has been doctored to make it look more legitimate than it is. The “Top 100” download list does not “actually portray the most popular downloads,” say prosecutors, and they claim that Megaupload purposely offers no site-wide search engine as a way of concealing what people are storing and sharing through the site.

Facebook recently introduced music service in collaboration with most of the major online music players, as well as many streaming radio services, and even recent upstarts like Spotify, tune.in, iheartradio, earbits, rdio, Songza, Jelli, deezer, rhapsody etc. But these services were restricted to two things-

Let your friends know what you’re listening.

Listen to what they are listening to or played earlier.

And today they have taken a step further which is “Listen to Music with your Friends“, that simply means you and your friend both listening to the same song and the best part it you can also discuss your favorite moments attached with that song. See what Facebook says for this new feature-

Today, with music services on Facebook, there’s a new way to listen with friends. This feature lets you listen along with any of your friends who are currently listening to music. You can also listen together in a group while one of your friends plays DJ.

You can listen to the same song, at the exact same time—so when your favorite vocal part comes in you can experience it together, just like when you’re jamming out at a performance or dance club.

So, How It Works??

Look for the music note in the chat sidebar to see which of your friends are listening to music. To listen with a friend, hover over their name, and click the Listen With button. The music will play through the service your friend is using.

When a new song plays, you’ll come along for the ride, discovering new music while your friend DJs for you.

You’ll also have the option to chat about what you’re listening to. As other people start listening along, they’ll join the party in a group chat.

You can also control who you’re listening along with through your settings. Isn’t that amazing? This feature will start rolling out over the next few weeks. So just wait and look forward to your turn.

Why there is a need to Root Android phone? This is the question asked by one of my friend yesterday. Thanks to him for asking this and motivating me to write an article on Rooting Android phones easily with no hurdles. So before moving to How to root an Android phone, lets have a look at what all benefits you will get once your phone is rooted.

Android is considered as most open mobile platform, but some users (including me) still need more control over the phone; and that is where Rooting helps you. Rooting allows users for some cool features that probably ought to be enabled in Android by default, such as on-the-fly screen capture, tethering capabilities (even on phones whose carriers don’t allow it), and advanced firewall apps.

But before you start of with rooting your device let me warn you for something

Rooting your device will void its warranty. In future something happens to your phone don’t even look at your warranty card. Also notice that rooting your device incorrectly may cause unexpected consequences.

How to Root your device

What you need?

A Computer

A USB Cable

A software [as mentioned below]

and most importantly [don't do it when you are in hurry]

If you consider yourself a tech savvy person download one of the software mentioned below-

Z4Root

Universal AndRoot

SuperOneClick

If you think don’t want to take much of the risk, try this simple option-

Unrevoked (for HTC Users)
This tool provides simple rooting for HTC Android phones: the Incredible, Desire, Wildfire, Aria, Hero, and Evo 4G.

Samsung has yet not made an official announcement about launching Samsung Galaxy S3, but there are several instances that indicates the launch of S3. The recent Samsung processor developments that includes announcing several new Exynos dual-core processor during the end of 2011 indicates that Galaxy S3 will be also powered with the same. February’s Mobile World Congress event is on its way and all big players like Samsung, HTC, Nokia etc are ready to release their latest phones in the market. As a trend it is expected that the phone will be first launched in UK, US and then to the rest of the world.

3D Smartphone

Some Korean reporters also suggest that it will be called Samsung Galaxy S3D instead of Galaxy S3 as it will be a 3D smartphone. You will be able to watch 3D movies and can enjoy 3D games on Galaxy S3 very conveniently. It is also expected that Samsung will include 3D glasses in accessories with the phone.

Processor

Samsung has officially revealed its work on the dual-core Exynos 4212, a dual-core ARM9 chipset that’s claimed to be 30% more efficient and substantially faster than the processor of Galaxy S2. Exynos 4212 is powered with 1.8 GHz CPU speed.

Memory

The industry benchmark these days is 1GB RAM, so Samsung S3 being the top on the ladder is providing double of it i.e. 2GB RAM. Internal storage of the phone is expected to be 16GB. 16GB, I am really not sure how many of you will really need a external storage after this.

Display

Samsung Galaxy S3 will be featured with 4.6″ Super AMOLED Plus 3D screen. Galaxy S2 has 4.3″ screen, HTC Sensation XL being 4.7″, Galaxy Nexus being 4.65″ and Galaxy Note having 5.3″. Galaxy S3 will not be having a screen equivalent to Galaxy Note, otherwise you will need a stylus for this too so 4.6″ is very optimum.

Features of Samsung S3 in a nutshell

4.6″ 1280×720 Super AMOLED Plus 3D Screen

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

2GB RAM (four times the RAM in iPhone 4S)

12MP W750 BSI CMOS Camera with 1080p Recording with awfully-bright dual-LED flash

2 megapixel front-facing camera

16 or 32 Gb of internal memory

USB 3.0 capability

4G LTE right off the bat

1.8GHz Quadcore Samsung Exynos CPU

9mm thick body

Touchwhiz 5.0 overlay

The Samsung Galaxy S III is expected to show itself at the Mobile World Conference, Barcelona in February 2012. Price of the phone is still not revealed.

Year 2011 was a boom for smartphones around the globe. Mobile manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, HTC and others have worked very hard and competitively to cope-up with user requirements and expectations. Some of them also came out with features more than expectations. Here is a list of the smartphones who have performed very well in 2011.

Images on blogs, websites and around the globe creates a great combination and experience for the visitor to understand and get connected with the content. But what if your image takes ages to load and loses the excitement with slow loading pages? I know your answer, so here is a solution. I know many of you must be using photoshop’s “save as webpage” option, many of my friends also uses “Microsoft Office Picture manager” to edit pics for webpage but that doesn’t serves the purpose of being the best possible image. Best is when it doesn’t loses the quality and is minimum in size.

Let me share with you some of the best tools you can use to optimize or compress images to put on your blog or website.

JPEGCROP

A tool recommended by Google to serve optimized “jpeg” images for webpages. The Jpegcrop Windows Application was initially developed to provide a convenient interactive user interface for the new jpegtran -crop feature. It has now developed to a nearly complete user interface replacement for jpegtran, and furthermore for demonstration of the new djpeg and jpegtran -scale features.

PNGOUT

PNGOUT is a tool which can optimize “PNG” files created by other programs. It can be run from the Windows Run dialog box or at the command prompt. PNGOUT can produce even smaller files than pngcrush -brute or optipng -o7. The purpose of PNGOUT is to optimize files created by other image tools. It is not designed to duplicate their functionality.

Radical Image Optimization Tool

SUPERGIF

SuperGIF is supports both Macintosh and Windows and a very different kind of tool. It is the very first of its kind, and such a simple, easy tool to use that it is difficult to write about. There is little to say in describing SuperGIF past what it does – effortlessly make all your GIF images and animations smaller.

IMAGEOPTIM

ImageOptim optimizes images — so they take up less disk space and load faster — by finding best compression parameters and by removing unnecessary comments and color profiles. It handles PNG, JPEG and GIF animations. ImageOptim provides GUI for various optimisation tools: AdvPNG from AdvanceCOMP, OptiPNG, Pngcrush, JpegOptim, jpegtran from libjpeg, Gifsicle and optionally PNGOUT.

TRIMAGE

Trimage is a cross-platform GUI and command-line interface to optimize image files via optipng, pngcrush, advpng and jpegoptim, depending on the filetype (currently, PNG and JPG files are supported). All image files are losslessy compressed on the highest available compression levels. Trimage gives you various input functions to fit your own workflow.

DYNAMIC DRIVE Image Optimizer

A great online tool to optimize your images online by Dynamic Drive. Image Optimizer lets you easily optimize your gifs, animated gifs, jpgs, and pngs, so they load as fast as possible on your site. Furthermore, you can easily convert from one image type to another. Remember, here there is a limit- you can only compress a image which should be already less than 300KB.

TWEAKPNG

TweakPNG is a low-level utility for examining and modifying PNG image files. The current version requires Windows 2000 or higher (XP, Vista, etc.), though it is possible to build a copy that runs on Windows 95/98/ME. In order to use it, you will need to be at least somewhat familiar with the internal format of PNG files.

If you know any similar tool, which can do better than these please share with us. BTW my favorite is JPEGCROP for compressing JPEG and PNGOUT for PNG image files.

Yeah! Its good news for HTC Desire S owners. Now you can update your phone to Android 2.3.5 software version 2.15.720.3 with loads of amazing feature and updates that makes it more elegant, comfortable and more user friendly. It was expected that with Android 2.3.5 users will get a revamped version of Gmail and Android Market that would provide you access to enhanced notification and priority sync. Gmail got revamped before this release and other features came out to be more than as expected.

The new update started in Europe around a week ago and today it came to India. Now lets move on to whats new in Android 2.3.5 for HTC users and how to get it.

As usual the simplest way to get the new firmware version is - go to MENU> Settings> About phone>Check Updates. But before doing that it very much recommended that you backup important files from your phone. Remove the SD card and don’t forget to backup your contacts too. Usually nothing is gonna happen to your files and contacts but this is safety measure. Put your device on charge, connect to your Wi-Fi network (don’t use data networks) and search for updates.

What’s new in Android 2.3.5 for HTC users

Some of the most amazing features of new firmware update are-

Notifications for missed calls, emails, messages can be seen even if screen is locked.

Revamped Incoming Call Screen

New threaded message styling with message backup option

3D style home screens (7-screens in a loop too)

Android Market 3.4.4 Updated

Improved Music Player

Improved Video Player (with trimming option)

HTC Sense 3.0 revamped Graphics and UI.

Improved Gallery – Now with grid view

Photo Gallery grid widget

Camera software enhancements (lastest pic can be seen on top left corner of camera)

Keyboard input style enhanced.

Here are some virgin Add-ons for HTC Desire S

New Live Wallpapers

Freind Channel Widget

Photo Gallery Widget

Amazing Lock Screens (with 6 options)

New Task Manager

Storage Encryption

The new version also revamped preview of messages, music player, keyboard input, lock screen and gave a new styling clocks and photo grid widget. Below are some of the images that will give you a glimpse of all new features-

Mozilla’s newest release of Firefox 9 for android provides great features to enhance the experience of browsing on tablets and smart-phones. It also said that this release is meant for Android tablets. Whаt’s vital аbουt thіѕ build іѕ thаt Mozilla redesigned thе user interface tο work аnԁ look optimally οn tablets. Thе companionship hаѕ аƖѕο done аn brilliant job іn keeping thе app’s overall size down, consuming a mere 128 KB once іt’s wеnt tο thе SD card.

Mozilla said-

Thе Awesome Screen integrates Firefox Sync аnԁ mаkеѕ іt simple tο access уουr browsing history, open tabs, bookmarks аnԁ saved passwords асrοѕѕ desktop аnԁ mobile devices ѕο уου саn type less аnԁ browse more.

Mozilla also quoted that these release is an attempt tο bе more visual, more magazine-Ɩіkе іn thе browser’s overall content presentation wіth thіѕ newest release. Thе left-hand thumbnail column, whісh іѕ typically tucked away, hаѕ bееn simplified tο provide a tab-Ɩіkе feel, connecting thе thumbnail tο thе actual page. Mozilla hаѕ аƖѕο added аn “Proceedings Bar” menu next tο thе Awesome Bar thаt allows thе user tο access Firefox Preferences, Add-ons, downloads аnԁ more.

Download the new Firefox 9 for android here.

Enhanced features -

Browse your favorite sites with minimal or no typing

Embedding add-ons make customization quickly and easily

Better speed and robust

Convenience of tabbed browsing on the go

Social sharing made easy

Location aware browsing and sharing.

I hate it becoz -

No flash support

Going back to old pages sucks

No option to change user agent, so everything runs in phone mode

Sluggish HTML 5 support (Facebook classic and google music sucks).

Watch this amazing video by Mozilla

Thе Proceedings Bar adds thе back, forward аnԁ bookmark buttons fοr simple access. One-upset bookmarks enable уου tο add аn icon tο уουr Android home screen fοr уουr favorite websites аnԁ Web apps, mаkіnɡ Web apps аѕ simple tο υѕе аѕ native apps. Features are good but some are missed so, I personally don’t recommend this version of Firefox though I love Firefox on destop very much.

Facebook recently explained how they are making money from advertising. They also announced that sponsored stories (ads) will officially begin to be displayed within the news feed. Are they trying to make their cash cows transparent or they are disguising users with showing the better side of the coin? I am not very sure at this moment, lets see what they disclosed so far-

They say-

From the beginning, the people who built Facebook wanted it to be free for everyone. It now costs over a billion dollars a year to run Facebook, and delivering ads is how Facebook pays for this.

There was a buzz few days ago that Facebook is sharing/selling user’s personal information to make money. In reply to this Facebook said-

No. Facebook does not sell your personal information. Instead, Facebook makes its money from showing you ads.
Selling your information would actually be bad for Facebook. Here’s why: Facebook was created to help you share and connect with the people in your life. If you don’t feel like you’re in control of who sees what you share, you probably won’t use Facebook as much, and you’ll share less with your friends. Not only is that bad for Facebook, it’s also bad for you. That’s why only the people you choose to share with see your stuff.

The most important thing here to notice is they said they are not selling your information for money purpose, that doesn’t mean they are not sharing it to get you relevant ads.

Indian Telecom Industry is now one of the fastest growing industries in the world. This rapid growth has been possible due to various proactive and positive decisions of the Government and contribution of both by the public and the private sector. The rapid strides in the telecom sector have been facilitated by liberal policies of the Government that provide easy market access for telecom equipment and a fair regulatory framework for offering telecom services to the Indian consumers at affordable prices.

Growth is also dependent Government initiatives like MNP (Mobile Number Portability), launching latest smartphones of the generation like iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S2 and others with competitive prices and features. The Telecom industry has been divided into two major segments, that is – fixed/wireline and wireless services. Below is an Infographic based on the recent facts and figures being collected from various service providers around the nation by Official Government bodies.

It is expected that it will start selling out from US, UK, Canada and Australia and then rest of the world gradually.

Recently we told you about Windows 8 app store being ready to be launched soon, here comes one more flavor to it. And this time its more excited than the previous news. Windows 8 app store will allow open source apps, that means those apps released under a license from the Open Source Initiative (GPL, Apache, etc.) can be distributed in the Windows App Store suggests Windows Store Application Developer Agreement.

Though Microsoft has not yet revealed anything on these initiatives, but to compete with existing Apple and Android app store, Microsoft has to come up with one great USP. In fact, when we talk about being different from other app store (Apple and Android), we should not forget that Microsoft has already achieved platform unity across all devices. While on the other hand Apple and Android devices are struggling between those typical version races.

A user who goes through their day switching between the latest generation of Apple and Android devices will go crazy while Windows users will enjoy an experience that will be unified throughout.

All we can do right now, is wait and watch where these three giants gonna take this app world.
