Facebook recently introduced music service in collaboration with most of the major online music players, as well as many streaming radio services, and even recent upstarts like Spotify, tune.in, iheartradio, earbits, rdio, Songza, Jelli, deezer, rhapsody etc. But these services were restricted to two things-

Let your friends know what you’re listening.

Listen to what they are listening to or played earlier.

And today they have taken a step further which is “Listen to Music with your Friends“, that simply means you and your friend both listening to the same song and the best part it you can also discuss your favorite moments attached with that song. See what Facebook says for this new feature-

Today, with music services on Facebook, there’s a new way to listen with friends. This feature lets you listen along with any of your friends who are currently listening to music. You can also listen together in a group while one of your friends plays DJ.

You can listen to the same song, at the exact same time—so when your favorite vocal part comes in you can experience it together, just like when you’re jamming out at a performance or dance club.

So, How It Works??

Look for the music note in the chat sidebar to see which of your friends are listening to music. To listen with a friend, hover over their name, and click the Listen With button. The music will play through the service your friend is using.

When a new song plays, you’ll come along for the ride, discovering new music while your friend DJs for you.

You’ll also have the option to chat about what you’re listening to. As other people start listening along, they’ll join the party in a group chat.

You can also control who you’re listening along with through your settings. Isn’t that amazing? This feature will start rolling out over the next few weeks. So just wait and look forward to your turn.

Facebook recently explained how they are making money from advertising. They also announced that sponsored stories (ads) will officially begin to be displayed within the news feed. Are they trying to make their cash cows transparent or they are disguising users with showing the better side of the coin? I am not very sure at this moment, lets see what they disclosed so far-

They say-

From the beginning, the people who built Facebook wanted it to be free for everyone. It now costs over a billion dollars a year to run Facebook, and delivering ads is how Facebook pays for this.

There was a buzz few days ago that Facebook is sharing/selling user’s personal information to make money. In reply to this Facebook said-

No. Facebook does not sell your personal information. Instead, Facebook makes its money from showing you ads.
Selling your information would actually be bad for Facebook. Here’s why: Facebook was created to help you share and connect with the people in your life. If you don’t feel like you’re in control of who sees what you share, you probably won’t use Facebook as much, and you’ll share less with your friends. Not only is that bad for Facebook, it’s also bad for you. That’s why only the people you choose to share with see your stuff.

The most important thing here to notice is they said they are not selling your information for money purpose, that doesn’t mean they are not sharing it to get you relevant ads.

With recent changes to Twitter social media buttons and new Twitter design, I am so proud of Twitter coming up with this feature of embedding a tweet in your website [...]

With recent changes to Twitter social media buttons and new Twitter design, I am so proud of Twitter coming up with this feature of embedding a tweet in your website or blog just by adding a code piece in your article or website.

Twitter said

Every Tweet has a story that’s more than just 140 characters. It has an author, mentions @people and #topics, contains media, and has actions you can use to share or join the conversation. It’s a dynamic piece of media, and we believe that everyone should be able to view and interact with Tweets on the Web in the same ways you would from any Twitter client.

Today, we’re introducing embeddable Tweets, a new way to add any Tweet to your website just by copying and pasting a line of code. Your website visitors will see a Tweet that focuses on the content by surfacing the conversation and media.

See for example my recent tweet on twitter being embedded below, see the live working buttons out there-

Search API will now always return “real” Twitter user IDs. The with_twitter_user_id parameter is no longer necessary. An era has ended. ^TS

— Twitter API (@twitterapi) November7, 2011

So how to get that?

1. All you need to do is get the url of the tweet which you want to embed in your website

2. Now copy paste the below code where you want that embedded tweet to appear (dont forget to change the url)-

You can get the code here

3. All done!! That was so easy right?

Another great announcement for twitter lovers, after revamping the design Twitter now introduced new sharing buttons. The new buttons are sleak, elegant and very light, unlike the old buttons new sharing buttons load much faster. It looks like Twitter has done homework very well this time. See these new sharing buttons-

You can see there are two new buttons been introduced this time i.e “Tweet to #hashtag” and “Tweet to @handle”. The new #hashtag button tells your visitors there’s an interesting conversation happening on Twitter, and lets them join in with just one click. The @mention button encourages visitors to Tweet to your account, driving public conversation directly from your website. Tweet #hashtag button can be effectively used in giveaways, contest and to keep yourself engaged with conversations happening on that topic or event.

Liked these new button? You can easily get them here “New Twitter Sharing Buttons“.

While using the new twitter on my PC, I also came across a new thing that twitter revealed today and that is embedding a tweet in your website of article of your blog. This is a very handy feature that I liked the most. Suppose you are writing a article on new Google Panda rollout and you remember a tweet talking about the tips for effective SEO techniques and you want to mention that in your article, all you need to do is put a simple two liner code there and you are all done. See here how to embed a tweet to your website or blog.

Adding a Google+ Page badge to your website will enable users who are signed in with their Google account to directly add you G+ page to their circles. The best part is google has made it very easy and allows user to even choose which circle they want your Page to be added. So this is now very significant, if you have a Google+ Page, add a badge on your website soon and if you have not yet created a page; do it right away create a Google+ page.

The very first thing you need to do after creating a Google+ Page is link your website to your Google+ Page and that you can do simply by adding a ‘link’ tag in <head> section of your website, here is the code you need to add-

Yeah! you heard that right. Now you can call your facebook friends for free. All you need is the new Skype version installed on your PC. You can make a video call, can do group screen sharing. Initiating a Facebook-to-Facebook call from within Skype is quite easy; all you need to do is connect your Skype and Facebook accounts. Then, select a Facebook friend and hit the video call button in Skype- your friend simply picks up the call from Facebook.

But the bad news is this can be only done on your PC right now, Skype team may be working hard to come up with mobile versions soon too. For now lets have a look how can we make these calls happen-

Skype said on their blog

“Today we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Facebook has reached yet another milestone with the launch of Skype 5.4 Beta for Mac and Skype 5.7 Beta for Windows allowing you to conduct a Facebook-to-Facebook call from within Skype. This new development in the Skype-Facebook partnership is the latest example of how Skype is removing communication barriers and making it easier to connect with friends, family and business colleagues.”

These new feature lets you maintain social connections with your Facebook friends and compliments previously announced features such as being able to see when your Facebook friends are online, read their status updates and IM them all from Skype.

All ready!! Download the new Skype for Mac | Skype for Windows

On 7 Nov 2011, Google+ revealed their so awaited feature called Google+ Pages. Google said on their blog-

So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people. But we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.

I am here not to discuss how a multinational or global brand can get benefits from Google+ Pages, but we will talk about How a Startup can use it to boost its activities. Infact, I think Google+ Pages so far are more beneficial for a startup than a big shot like Pepsi, The Muppets, Toyota etc. Let me share some couple of points to answer “How can you say that?” kinda question in your mind.

The Beta factor

Google+Pages as of now are in beta phase, that typically means this is the first time this service is available outside of the organization that developed it. That gives you the benefit of engaging with early adopters, all you see there are them only. The actual purpose of releasing a service in ‘beta’ phase is getting a usability test and that is where a startup can jump in. So my only point here is a startup can take a risk to experiment things right now, while a global brand needs to think twice or may be thrice.

The Admin Control

Being a Startup how many resources in terms of human resources can you dedicate only for this activity which is still in beta phase. We are not talking about the success or failure of Google+ Pages here, we are talking about the resources. I think hardly ‘one’ while a multinational brand can outsource this social campaign to a Digital Media company which makes minimum 2-3 people who will be involved in analyses of this campaign. And you know what? Google+ Pages so far only allows one admin, so who has an edge?

You better Hangout

Discussions, Ahh!! that is what we do most of the time and Google+ Hangouts have given it an entirely new bend. With Google+ Hangouts video conferencing has become very easy and more than that you can also control whether to keep it public or private. That gives you more flexibility to talk to your customers very easily. Apart from all we just discussed Startups can use Hangouts for training, online seminars, casual meetings etc which is not scalable for a Brand.

Be more Customized

Being a startup, I am sure you must be emphasizing more on personal interactions and engagements; actually that is practical also as compared to a Brand. I remember in one of my previous article about Is Google+ falling apart? one of my friend Pat said “Google+ is about content curation and conversation with leanings toward the intellectual, Comparing it with Facebook is like comparing bananas and kiwi“. I agree to this statement, and this is where Startups can take advantage of Google+. Interact, engage and act as per your customers.

There are few more points that I have in my mind, but the major ones I have already mentioned above. A Global Brand has a lot more worries and issues to report to Google+ Pages like adding more than one website, getting a personal+short url for their page, custom themes as per their color or logo, etc. And I am sure Google+ team must be working hard on it, but by the time they do a boom boom, startups can go ahead and start building their platform right this moment.

I am sure you also hold an opinion about this, please share with us.

Google Plus (G+) is now open to all Google apps user. All Google Apps users, paid Business version or just the free version, can now operate Google Plus for their company or group.

I know several people who never signed in for a Google plus account because they don’t have a Gmail account, they used yahoo mail for personal use and Google apps in their company. Creating one more account and then going to Google+ was a headache for them. So see Google has made it easy for you. Now you can access G+ from your existing Google apps account.

This was very much expected as when I was researching for my previous article on Google+ titled “Is Google+ falling apart?“. One of my friend said they are yet to open for Google apps and also coming up with Business pages.

So from now on more Hangouts, more sharing and more plus ones on Google+. Hangouts will be useful for casual conference calls and screen sharing working jointly in Google Docs.

Shoot people!! here you go.. plus.google.com

And you can clearly make out from the title that the new hero is Larry Page. Well this is true, Larry Page is now the most circled person on Google+. Its been like 4 months Google+ has been launched and Mark was the most popular person there. But as the recent statistics indicate Larry Page has become the most popular personality on Google+.

Here are top 5 users of Google+

Thanks to www.socialstatistics.com for all the above graphs and stats. Figures also indicate that Snoop Dogg is one of the top 5 movers rising towards the top list. Do you think Snoop or Mark can beat Larry Page ?

If you have a Facebook Fan Page of your Company, product, service, website, blog or anything, the most important thing there is the interactions that take place between you as [...]

If you have a Facebook Fan Page of your Company, product, service, website, blog or anything, the most important thing there is the interactions that take place between you as a Page and your fans and customers. A week ago, one of my friend asked me “Is there a way that gives a notification to my fan, if I reply back to their query?” At that time I replied him back a disappointing and frustrating “No”. Because this is what I have been thinking of, the moment I started handling Fan Pages of my clients.

Moreover some of the pages I handle have a huge userbase, so when two people of same first name asks something about company’s products or features, it becomes a difficulty to reply them back. Yeah, I know you will say I can use their full name but what about they have that same too. You getting my point, use full name, last name – these are just some workarounds, I wanted something more concrete. And see this-

But there is good news for all who faced the similar problem and want to interact with their fans in a better way. Now you can reply to your fans mentioning their names followed by “@” symbol, the normal mention we use on our profile. Facebook has released this feature very cleverly, i tell u you how-

A Fan Page can mention name of other pages they like, anywhere – status, comments, etc.

A page can only mention names of fans in comment box.

You can only mention name of those fans who have asked or commented something on your post.

So the catch here is its more of a post specific and responding back to queries kinda feature. But it is actaully a good feature. So enjoy more personalised conversations from now on.

Today twitter asked users to invite their friends via email. Its been a long time, we have not heard a good change from Twitter. All we have known is they launching Hindi and other languages. This time they want users to invite their friends via a pre-structured email.

Below is the screen shot you gonna see on top right side of your twitter profile.

To send invites to multiple friends you can simply enter their email addresses separating them by “,” (comma). To see what email will be sent to your friend, simply click on “See what you’ll send them”, it will show you an pre-structured email as you can see below-

Twitter, what is the use of inviting friends here when you are not making much sense these days for normal public. We need some good changes, that can bring my twitter addiction back.

Google+ (Google plus) has achieved some outstanding milestones in past but the way its growing now, clicked a question in ma mind “Is Google+ falling apart?”. My love to Google and its services immediately replied this question with a big “NO” but on a second thought I realized that I spend less time on Google+ these days as what I used to spend a month ago.

I started collecting some latest facts and stats about Google+ and here are my findings-

Google+ has more than 40 Million users as of now (according to Larry Page).

An average user spends 5 mins 15 seconds on Google+ while on Facebook it is 25 mins.

An overall decline of 3% total visits of Google+ in US only.

41% fall in use of Google+ in last one month according to 89n.com

I came across more facts and figures which I have shared in the below Infographic.

Expert Opinion

I approached some of industry experts asking them the same question “Is Google+ falling apart?” and was so happy to see their replies back to my inbox. Below are their comments-

Not at all. The big drivers of adoption are still in the future. These include business accounts, API integration, etc.

Right now, Google+ is populated mainly by early adopters. Why? Because it’s early. But Google will bake it into everything, people will publish on Google+ — there are a thousand reasons why people will find themselves using the site even if they’re not members.

I’m skeptical about the success of google+. Great product & great inspiration for the market – but ‘me too’ simply doesnt work against FB – And whatever I have seen up to now, g+ is very much me too! – so why should the masses switch? – and most will not maintain 2 such similar social networks.

While the early excitement around Google+ was awesome, it appears to be shedding some of its appeal/momentum now. Main reason, Google+ hasn’t projected us anything new that we weren’t previously getting from it’s competitive services such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs et al. People started to get tired with the service. But, I don’t thing it’s going to dead. I believe, the future of Google+ would rely on what innovations/attractions they will come up with and their clear-cut privacy/user policies.

I don’t think so. And, I think the perceived competition between the two is over-hyped. Google+ is about content curation and conversation with leanings toward the intellectual. Facebook (with its origin as a college online what-are-you-doing-now, who-are-you-dating, want-to-get-a-beer site) chronicles our day-to-day lives..the games we play, our political stances, where we vacation, where we eat, what we’re reading…it mirrors ourselves. Comparing the two is like comparing bananas and kiwi. Both will survive the pseudo-war.

I must admit that I don’t spend alot of time on Google+ …I need to go over and spend some time there but my choice of platforms are Facebook and Twitter and for gaming it is Empire Avenue. This is where I spend the bulk of my time and it is where I have the most meaningful relationships.

Personally, its loosing its charm on me, I still jump into conversations there from time to time but I’ve gotten less interested recently. However, I think its still new and we should give them a little chance still.

I think that like all new things at first everybody jumps on it… and later it stabilizes. But Google is always inventing new things, so you never know what they might pull out now!

The two major social networks before Google+ was launched, now joining hands to get back their dominance. Yeah you said that right!! I am talking about Facebook and Twitter getting together to threaten Google+. After the launch of Google+, most of the techies has shifted from Twitter to G+ and most of the photographers shifted from Facebook to G+. Though Google+ is still not on the highest step of social ladder but the way it is climbing, its splendid. And that forced Facebook and Twitter to make so many changes in last few weeks, to gain some attraction back.

Twitter added some more languages, image upload feature, preview to some featured tweets and many more changes. And on the other hand Facebook started off with asking users to report a bug and earn $500, then removed the 25 fans restriction from Facebook Pages, added Facebook messenger app, enhanced sharing feature and ‘subscribe’ button, changed the entire interface and recently launching Facebook Timeline, Facebook Music and many more changes that they have declared at F8.

But there is one thing that both of them are working on very silently and that is integration between the two platforms to make it very easy for users to update their statuses from any of the platform. That will enable you to update your Facebook status from Twitter and you can also tweet from Facebook without any thirdparty application.

Below image shows how you can update your Facebook status from Twitter and Facebook is yet to declare the integration with Twitter. Which according to few sources they will declare very soon.

So what do you think? Are they really gonna threaten Google+ or is this just a bonding they wanna show off?

I have heard from many of my friends they don’t like new Facebook interface, and in that also most of them hated that top right Ticker. Harsh has already given a way which Facebook discontinued after a few hours and now its not working. But we still have a workaround to that.

For those like me, who didn’t like new Facebook interface and redesign here is workaround through which you can get the old Facebook interface/design back. It needs you to do just a very few simple steps and you will get that immediately. And the best part is you don’t need to install any scripts.

Here we Go-

On your new Facebook Design Go to “Account Setting“.

In General Tab, see what you have selected your preferred language

Change it to English [UK] or may be Hindi (for Indians)

Facebook has disable this trick, here is the new workaround to Disable New Facebook Interface

Today morning I logged in to my Facebook account and saw some great status messages from my friends. But one of them made me think whether I am on Facebook or Google+? The overall blue theme was indicating it as Facebook but the feature I saw was on Google+.

Then I realized this may be new feature Facebook has came up with. They have enhanced the share feature that looks more like Google+. See the screen-shot below.

This is not the first time Facebook is replicating features of Google+. They have already replicated Google+ Hangouts, recently they also integrated a feature where you can control with whom you are sharing your content, thats too from Google+.

Come on Facebook team get something NEW this time. Having said that, have you heard any rumor about Facebook launching a feature soon which will change the entire way you communicate with people? Its some sort of “Subscribe” feature.

As we mentioned earlier Twitter has just launched a hindi version of Twitter on Hindi Diwas. Now you can simply tweet in Hindi with no workarounds and extensions required.

On 14 September 1949 Hindi was recognised as RashtraBhasha in India. On 14 Sep 2011 Twitter has supported Hindi language and celebrated Hindi Diwas. Its quite a good gesture from team Twitter.

It is also expected that twitter will be launching 16 more languages in coming weeks. Lets see what comes next and on which day.

You can start tweeting in Hindi from this link of Twitter.

Twitter has recently crossed its milestone of 100 Million users as they mentioned in their blog. And alexa indicates Twitter still has a major traffic coming from United States (27.7%), and other countries are like Japan (7.7%), India (6.1%), UK (5.5%), Brazil (4.1).

So may be in order to attract more users from countries other than US, Twitter announced they will be supporting 17 more languages. And Hindi is one of them, after launching Hindi, Filipino, Malay and Simplified and Traditional Chinese in next weeks.

Like other languages, you [will] be able to access twitter in Hindi from this url http://twitter.com/?lang=hi.

Twitter will be first social network to officially support Hindi as language. With India they might be targeting another chunk of million users out of 100 Million online users of India.
