Gmail Security Tips

Always use HTTPS.

HTTPS is used to encrypt data as it is transmitted between computers on the Internet, so look for the “https” in the URL bar of your browser to indicate that the connection between your computer and Gmail’s servers is encrypted.  Open Settings and choose “Always use HTTPS” on the General tab if you want to turn it on.

Always Remember to sign out.

Most of the people don’t remember to sign out or they close the browser directly especially when using a public computer, be careful to sign out of your Google account when you’re finished. If you’re using a public or shared computer and want to be extra thorough, you can also clear the browser’s cache, cookies and history. Then, completely close the browser.

Always keep Alphanumeric Passwords

The best way to secure your password from hackers and other attacks is to use a strong alphanumeric password and that also needed to be changed periodically (may be monthly or once in two months).

Do not send sensitive information via email (Phishing Attacks).

Once you send an email, you’re no longer in control of the information it contains. Never share credit card details, customer records or other sensitive information like your address and contact details to any unknown person. Always look into the email id of the sender first.

Keep a track on your Account Activity

Gmail has a very useful feature of tracking your Account Activities. Scroll Down to the end of the inbox, and you will see a footer like this -

click on the details and you will get know what all activities are going on with your email account. In this way you can also check whether your account is hacked or not.

Beware of unexpected attachments.

Always keep a check on the attachments you receive through email. Either you can ask the sender about the attachment or you should look at the size of the attachment. Most of the viruses and malware files are around 1-2 KB size. So beware of such files, and also get verification of attachment by the sender (if its unexpected).

Update Account recovery information.

Your account recovery information helps you regain access to your account if you ever forget your password, or if someone gains access to your account without your permission. Every Gmail user must select a security question and answer — be sure to choose a combination that is easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess or come across by investigating. Its recommended that you create your own question and answer accordingly.
